@Laman, yes, I've seen that quite a few times too and wondered why the website shows the place as being full yet there were plenty of open sites. A couple of times I asked a park ranger why and was amazed at the resistance they had directly answering the question. Almost to the point it seemed like they were keeping something quiet for a reason.
One reason that made a small amount of sense was that the cancellation fees were so high that the difference in money spent, whether you showed up or not, really is very little.
Personally, I wish they'd revamp the whole Florida state park reservation system because the southern third of the state CGs are full all winter and there is almost zero chance for a family who gets a nice weekend off to go camping and the CGs are full of retired Northerners. Nothing against Northerners escaping the cold but it seems like a raw deal for the locals. Perhaps change to a system similar to Pinellas County's system with Ft Desoto where the county residents can make reservations further in advance than non-residents plus they keep about 10% of their sites open for RVers without reservations.
Like many of you, I too have tried many nights in a row to make a reservation in a South Florida state park as far in advance as is allowed and it shows no openings. This is when starting at midnight to get an open site and still nothing.
