I have been a road warrior since the mid 1960s and had an outdoor career. I have been to nearly all the NMs in the West and all of the NP many times.
The most important thing is to be there at the right time when it is quiet. Popular parks are loved to death in the summer. Spring and fall are much better. Now I avoid most campgrounds in the summer because of the loud and unruly people. That is the time to be in the backcountry.
