I have been a road warrior since the mid 1960s and had an outdoor career. I have been to nearly all the NMs in the West and all of the NP many times.
The most important thing is to be there at the right time when it is quiet. Popular parks are loved to death in the summer. Spring and fall are much better. Now I avoid most campgrounds in the summer because of the loud and unruly people. That is the time to be in the backcountry.
I agree. People from other countries have discovered us and the parks are crowded with buses and people who do not know how to drive or are so much in a hurry to complete their bucket list, they pass on dangerous curves to get to the next Overlook. Since we camp with dogs, the trails are off limits but that is where you want to be to avoid the crowds except on the more popular hikes. There are many beautiful areas outside the national parks. There is an amazing area in Nevada that we have never seen anyone else at. I could name many others but those of you who travel to the more remote areas know what I am talking about.
