I file a change of address, then cancel the change before making the trip back. I don't think that any of the mail has ever gotten lost.
There are some "gotcha's" though. The USPS will forward one copy of a magazine subscription - but only one. You have to make the address change with the magazine publisher. And remember to make that same change before returning home.
Remember to cancel the change of address order before heading back home. AND put a mail hold on the home address until you get arrive home.
