Best FREE campgrounds--Deadman Lake and Lakeview Campgrounds in Tetlin National Wildlife Refuge, Alaska. Easy in and out from Alaska Highway and just across the state line from the Yukon. Deadman Lake has some 40' sites and easier access road, but we stayed at Lakeview. NO WATER even at Visitor's Center despite advice to contrary on Website, but can dump free at some gas stations in Tok (with fill-up). Also need lots of mosquito repellent, but that goes without saying--it's next to a lake in Alaska!
Best $14 campground: McPhee Reservoir's Juniper Campground just west of Dolores, CO. Price is with senior pass for paved RV sites with 30A electric, water (take a water thief as faucets are unthreaded), RV dump, and flush toilets. This centrally located campground gives you easy access to Mesa Verde NP, Canyons of the Ancients NM, Hovenweep NM, Yucca House NM, Lowry Pueblo, and San Juan National Forest. And do not miss the adjacent Anasazi Heritage Center, IMHO the best Anasazi museum anywhere!
