I have literally spend months sleeping under canvas tents, on the ground, or wherever I could throw down a sleeping bag; those nights were spent in all sorts of weather extremes. During my tour in Iraq, we endured 120+ degree summers, had no running water and used port-a-potties or pooped in a hole in the ground. I did't buy an RV to relive those days, but rather to escape them.
