Where Are All The Canadians?

Elizabeth, I haven't been looking at license plates yet. But we are in what used to be a sister park, if you are still in Tacna, and there have been eight Canadian couples cancel. The three parks behind us which also used to be sister parks look like a barren desert! During the summer we would see some Canadians and ask about the winter snowbirding season. Kind of mixed bag of answers. To us snowbirding is something that folks like to do but sure don't have to. Everybody has a bottom line and the limit may have hit. Not only the exchange rate, but the pricey out of country insurance rates. We do know of several that are coming for two months instead of the usual five. Funny, but we have three Ontario couples here where as last year, none, and for several seasons only one. Last season I thought I saw more Ontario plates in the Yuma area than I ever saw before. This isn't the only place. In late summer, as we usually do, we spend sometime in the Kalispell, MT. area. Normally on weekends, Lowes, Home Depot, Super Wal-Mart, Jo-Ann's Fabrics, and Costco parking lots are primarily Alberta plated vehicles. The Kalispell merchants offer weekend deals for eating, shopping and motels. Well this summer we definitely noticed the lack of Alberta plates. About that same time there was an article in the Kalispell paper about the situation. Then about a week later there was an interview in the Spokane, WA. newspaper with the manager of the Kalispell Costco and confirmed that we were seeing correctly. Also a couple of weeks ago, I saw in the Myrtle Beach, SC. newspaper that the business's there were trying to be pro-active to the possible downturn there and were busy sending coupons to the Ontario and Quebec provinces. I'm sure it will get more interesting just before and after New Years.

Seems like there is no 'shortage' of Canadians here in or Mesa AZ Park. In fact at coffee this AM our (Cal-am) sales folks claimed that they had sold ten new park models in the last two weeks -"many to Canadians".

I'm sorry to say that mass media leads to hysteria sometimes.

Even something as benign as the weather channel has led some of my family members to think RV'ing south is a death wish.

One incident viewed from a hundred different angles, is still just one incident. My FIL loved to say "this ain't no dress rehearsal, best to not worry and enjoy life." That applies to the costs of things, to terrorist events.

OK. Thought you were speaking of events happening in the south of the American continent. You are referring to events currently happening over seas. Definitely lots of stuff going on in the world right now. Disheartening to turn on the news some days. I still don't see why you think Canadians would be best to stay out of the US right now. We are currently in southern California enjoying ourselves along with thousands of others. I don't find the US or Mexico that scary. Should I? Nice people, interesting places, good food. Just sayin, are Americans or Mexicans mad at us for some reason? What did we do? :)

As well, why would you think we are "legally defenseless". If you want to buy a firearm in Canada you go to the hardware store and buy one. You need to pass the Canadian Firearms Safety Course (CFSC) (except handguns which gets a little trickier, you need another course for that). We have less gun enthusiasts in the country but I'm not sure why that makes us "legally defenseless". We as a culture frown on "open carry". But that is something we choose as a culture. You have your culture, we have ours.

I know we are not allowed to bring our weapons into the US but that is pretty much the case with any country and that is something that Americans have imposed on all foreigners. Frankly I think it is a good idea and am surprised that anyone is not in favour of it.

Just curious where all this is coming from.

If we let the terrorists frighten us into hunkering down and act scared, they win. We're not about to stay home because of something that may or may not happen. We don't consider ourselves "legally defenceless" and are not going to worry about it. Life is too short for that kind of thinking.

ISIS, Refugees, Threats to America, border jumpers, just to name the current weeks concerns, and that you guys are legally defenseless against any of this crazy stuff. If I had a choice and lived in Canada I would maybe skip this 2015/16 season and see what life brings to the table. JMHO.

Still not following. I read the world news in four languages every day. What happened in the world news that would keep Canadians from RVing to the Southern US and Mexico. Is something going on on the east coast?
