In the east,Va,W.Va,NC,SC,Ga etc have many nice forest service campgrounds and Army Corps of Engineer campgrounds. Many have electric hookups. You may see if there are any of these types in your area. Since you're still working,I assume you have vacation. My wife and I will often take mini vacations,going to a campground Sunday afternoon and stay until Wednesday. By doing this,you are more assured of getting a site then on the weekends.
Until now, we've visited many places by car. We usually get a hotel. But with a camper, well, even better: we can take the dog.
It's hard for the wife to get the time off but then, we do travel a LOT. We take some short trips, some longer ones...I'd say last year we had one overnight trip per month, and one day trip per month, minimum...mileage added to the car was maybe 7000-8000 total. Not bad for weekend warriors, but we'd like to go even more.
