where to go in Louisiana?

We are planning a trip to Louisiana probably in April. The problem is, we aren't sure exactly where to go. We are looking for a place somewhat centrally located that would allow us to stay in one spot while we are there. We really want to experience the Cajun culture. So a location where we can see some of the "tourist" attractions, such as a couple of plantation homes, spend a day in the French Quarter, listen to some great music, and sample some of the local cuisines. We'll probably want to run down to Grand Isle, and definately take in a good swamp tour. But we'd also like some find some "off the beaten path", must see, gem spots(which is what I really would like some help with). I've been kind of researching the Houma area as it looks like it could be centrally located, but I would like to hear from some locals and folks who are familiar with the area for some good recommendations.

  • Layfatte city park is a nice place to stay. We were there over a weekend and met some wonderful people. Many are cooking their wonderful cajun favorites. That was the first time I ever had read Boudain (spellling)Its a small park built in a large circle around a comon area with lots of spanish moss. Great resturants in the area as well

Definitely second this recommendation. If you want to experience Cajun culture, food and music, spend a week at Betty's - there's nothing like it.
  • All the suggestions above are good. My feeling is that if you have the time it would be best to plan to stop in more than one place; i.e. Houma area for New Orleans and Grand Isle, etc, and Abbeville/Lafayette for things in "Cajun Country", Lake Charles/Sulphur for things in that area. There is enough to see an do in south Louisiana that you don't want to waste a lot of driving time to get to things. The Houma Civic Center has power and water hookups available for RVs.
  • Thanks for the tips so far. I'm not looking for a campground or lodging just yet because I don't know if we'll be taking the camper, I'll cross that bridge once we decide what area we are going to go.
  • Houma has only 1 campground and it's at the rear of a not too good mobile home park. For that area I would stay in Morgan City or Patterson, accessible to lots more swamp tours, good food, etc.

    Enjoy and come hungry.

  • We have visited the Lafayette area several times and thoroughly enjoy it.
The locals are friendly, the food is terrific and the prices are fair.
We have stayed at several GCs and like Poches Fish and Camp in Breaux Bridge.
Visit Shadow on the Teche in New Iberia. Tour the Tabasco factory.
New Iberia has a great butcher shop as do many of the towns. Visit the Konriko factory.
There some nice festivals, church festivals with great church lady food. Go during Mardis Gras as the small towns have family oriented festivals with music that are civilized. We don't even bother with New Orleans anymore.
  • Well, while you're in Louisiana, might as well swing by Monroe and visit Duck Dynasty! We did when we were then. Then move on down to Alexandria and visit the Cajun Pawn Star store. We visited there too. Now, that's a store that absolutely awesome!
  • For a unique place to stay in Cajun Country I would suggest that you stay at Betty's RV Park in Abbeville, LA. Lots going on in April.
