We stayed at the St. Louis West KOA, which is just outside the city with easy access to the interstate to get into town. Even though it's close to the city, it has a lot of trees. If you have kids, they have a lot of amenities and activities.

The most unique thing to do in St Louis, especially with kids, is the City Museum, which is not really a museum. It's like a crazy indoor playground with slides, tunnels, and more. See my review here.
We also love the Arch, of course. The zoo is phenomenal and free, as is the science center. You can eat some of the best Italian food in an area known as The Hill.
