Cherry Hill Park is best for your first visit to the DC area. It's located in College Park MD. As others said, it has good access to the WMATA Metro. The Metro is pretty user friendly and will get you to all of the touristy stuff downtown. The CG staff is well versed in giving directions for getting downtown and what's going on in the area. The campground store is pretty well stocked and there is a grocery store right up the street.
