Which of these 3 Ala state parks are the best

Starting to plan some different trips for next year and I was wondering which one of the following parks are the best. Oak Mountain, Cheaha, or Desoto. I would like to know the good and the bad about these parks and any attraction around these parks. It could just be myself, the wife and the little dog or the grand kids could also be with us. We are looking at wanting to go to one of these parks in June and then again in October. Thanks for any replies.

X2 what BIRD FREAK says. Love the DESOTO site the best. Also just some 20 miles up the road from DESOTA is CLOUDLAND CANYON off of I59 which is much like DESOTA.. Both state parks up on the Lookout Mountain.

Have not ever been to OAK MOUNTAIN.

  • We have only been to Cheaha and Desoto. Was not impressed with Cheaha but love Desoto. Lots of waterfalls to see and Little River Canyon. Lots of hiking trails with a great place to eat at the lodge. Full hook ups including cable.
  • Of the three parks you mention, we have stayed only at Cheaha. Here are some pictures and comments about Mountain Top CG, where we stayed.

  • The only one of the three I have direct experience with is Desoto. It has a very nice campground that's been recently upgraded with sewer at most/all sites. We stayed there twice on our way up and back to Maine in 2012. You had to drive some to get to Walmart but it wasn't very far... 3-5 miles from what I remember. It's located on Lookout mountain in Fort Payne, home town of the group Alabama and it's obvious they're very proud of that. There's a museum for Alabama and some larger-than-life statues in a park right at the bottom of the mountain. We did quite a bit of hiking in the park itself and around the falls and all in all, I'd say it's one of my favorite parks.
  • Only familiar with Cheaha. We love it but its quite a climb and once you get there its a long way from any civilization (For us being more than 5 miles from a Walmart is a terifying experience similar to what the pioneers experienced when they settled the west)

The views from the mountain top are spectacular and the mountian top trails are good. We like the mountain top campground but its nothing fancy.
  • We hosted in AL at a forestry park and had many many campers who told us they loved Oak Mountain and went there often.
