Why is Crater Lake a must-see?

Having been there a couple of times, and camped all my life all over the west, I am surprised every time I see it on someone's itinerary.

The drive there is nice (no matter which route you take). But the park itself, meh. So, it's a lake. And there are volcanoes. But I've lived all my life among volcanoes and they are everywhere in the northwest.

Why aren't people going to Mt Hood or Mt Jefferson instead, speaking of volcanoes? I liked them so much better. C. Lake has a creepy vibe, IMO. I couldn't get out of there soon enough, last time.

Cue the 'personal choice' posts. Yep, I am expressing mine.

  • Ditto, we enjoyed our trip there even tho the road was closed halfway around the lake due to snow. We also visited Ranier for a week and would have gone to Helens but it was still snowed in. I was just thinking about one never mentioned Oregon park: The Oregon Caves. I visited those back in the 70's but don't recall that much about the place, must not have been too impressed.

  • What, in the world, are you asking? What does Mt. hood or Mt. Jefferson offer that Crater Lake doesn't offer? For those that haven't seen the lake, it's a must do!! It's the deepest lake in the USA.....it has no rivers or creeks dumping into it. It's GORGEOUS!!!! I've been on Hood and Jefferson and they're nothing compared to Crater!!
  • Yep, personal choice. For us, it was a national park we had never visited, and the lake is drop-dead gorgeous in sunny weather. We were pretty amazed how much snow they get there too (snow had mostly melted when we were there, but the tubes that allow you to get past the snow berms to see the view showed us just how much there is in the winter! :)
