Wind River Mountains

Anyone have suggestions for this area? Looking to hit it July, August in a class C, towed jeep, kayak and dual sprt motorcycle, 9 yr old boy. Suggestions what to see, where to camp?

Thanks,

Cb
  • Thanks for the tip! We plan on Pinedale. Dunno anything about the place, but I did review Green River Lake area, we'd like to stay a couple, few days run trails from that area and hike, kayak.since it's not so far from Jackson, we can hit that area before or after, stay at Gros Ventre or the campground on Jackson Lake.

The trail system coming out of the road to Green Valley Lake appears to have a way to the 26 hwy, and Dubois, Absoroka area? Good riding for a competent dual sport er enduro rider? Maybe the wife and kid on xr70, klx110?

Looks nice, fairly safe. Any other suggestions?

    Thanks
  • You could take a look at the Union Pass road....it will take you all the way across the range (Pinedale to Dubois ). Once on top, there are many “two-tracks” that can be traveled. When on top you can get to (not sure if by vehicle) Three Waters Mountain... where the runoff goes to, the Columbia , Colorado, and Mississippi rivers watersheds. The “Winds” are mostly recognized for their hiking, but does have some off roading potential!

Lived in Pinedale for 10 years on the western side of the winds. As far as access goes try Green River Lakes road to the end, nice campground and miles of FS roads to explore. If you prefer to boondock outside the campground is FS and many campsites. Also look up Soda lake and Willow lake. Good dirt road to either lake for free camping. Soda Lake has the best eating trout if your into fishing.

I suspected we were on the wrong side of the mountains---heh

  • We were there last July, spent a week in Lander. You should be aware that there is virtually no access to the Wind River range. It is mostly locked up in wilderness areas. Sink River Canyon is one spot to visit, Thermopolis to the north is another for the hot springs. We also went to Atlantic City but were very underwhelmed by that area. It's mainly a small village of expedient housing that we thought was on the less than attractive side. Shacks in other words and not picturesque ones either.

We spent a whole day trying to find a road into the Wind Rivers themselves. There is a pass to the north that we did not get to but the south is locked up in the Indian Reservation and if there is a way in we never found it. On our first camping trip west back in the 1980's we did find a road into the mountains but it may have been blocked off sometime after that. There was a campsite up in the mountains that we made it to that was excellent but we got snowed out back then. Whatever we never found it this trip.

My wife had some health problems and we had to cut our trip a bit short and return home.
