Here's some old posts with info for some of I-10 & areas off of it (also has links for I-40 (Northern NM & AZ) for sites & sights going down to San Antonio with some links on San Antonio & the Hill Country):
Tucson/Arizona, New Mexico & Texas ---- Ditto but Expanded with Northern NM Plus ---- Near Carlsbad Area New Mexico
Las Cruces ::::::::: I-10 to San Antonio ::::::::: US 285 Detour to Santa Fe from I-40 :::::: Back Roads New Mexico
West of Roswell US 70/US 380 to US 54 :::::::::::: Flagstaff - Gallup - Grants- Albuquerque - Santa Fe - Plus
You guys might be Using I-25: Around the T or C area, three state parks, Elephant Butte SP and Caballo SP with Caballo being closest to the interstate as well as Percha Dam State Park a nice place on Rio Grande, near Caballo Lake. Elephant Butte Lake State Park headquarters are 5 miles north of Truth or Consequences via I-25 exit 83. Caballo Lake State Park is 16 miles south of Truth or Consequences via I-25 exit 59 and NM 187. Percha Dam State Park is 21 miles south of Truth or Consequences via I-25, exit 59.
New Mexico State Parks Best Camping Prices Around & No Day Fees on top of camping fees (unlike CO & TX). Most (not all) have free showers. NM Camping Fees
North of TorC, just off of I-25 by San Antonio, NM, the Bosque del Apache Wildlife Refuge.
Bosque Birdwatchers RV Park Never stayed there, but have read about others staying there to see the Bosque. As a matter of fact you could take US 380 from I-25 at San Antonio to Carrizozo.
:C PS: One can reach Carrizozo from Santa Fe via US 285 (off I-25 east of Santa Fe) to NM 3 to US 54 S to Carrizozo & on to Alamogordo. Or from South of Las Vegas at Exit 339 off I-25, US 84 to I-40, but just cross & use NM 219 to US 54 on to Carrizozo, etc. One can also take US 285 (at Vaughn from US 54) to Roswell, to Carlsbad & on into Texas. To Fort Stockton & I-10 in fact, or keep on 285 to US 90 & miss the I-10 drive.
:C The Valley of Fires BLM Campground near Carrizozo is a first rate campground with electric & water hookups, good dump station and a fine shower house. Pics & description can be found: Campground
and Cloudcrof, Lincoln/Capitan, Carrizozo/White Oaks.
One of the most talked about green chile cheese burgers for years, is in San Antonio, NM at the Owl Bar.
Ditto
I have now been hearing about another green chile cheeseburger in San Antonio. The Buckhorn Tavern in San Antonio. A Food Review and Ditto
I believe the chef at Buckhorn beat Bobby Flay on a Throwdown with his.
San Antonio, New Mexico was the birth place & boyhood home of Conrad Hilton, founder of the Hilton Hotels.
:h One could find themselves going down through the Texas Panhandle as well, it seems.
Such as in or near Amarillo: Never been to the state park, but have read about it & would like to make it over there someday. Palo Duro Canyon State Park as well as Caprock Canyons State Park, from what I have read, seem like very neat areas to see. Caprock Canyons State Park & Trailway would make a neat place to check out. One I would like to see. For perhaps a neat experience, Copper Breaks State Park near Quanah sounds pretty cool.
Or Dumas City Park north of Amarillo and Littlefield city park near Lubbock. Likewise, near Clovis, NM, Muleshoe city park. Other Such Parks
We spend an overnight at a Walmart Supercenter - 702 West Loop 289, Lubbock 806-793-9686. There are more as well: Walmarts.
If your Route takes you near Raton Area of New Mexico. Between Clayton & Raton is the Capulin Volcano Nat'l Mon't. A Neat Place. ------ But no Camping
Near Clayton, Clayton Lake State Park. Never been to it, however.
Sugarite Canyon State Park by Raton is a neat area.
Not far S of Springer, just off I-25 is Fort Union Nat'l Mon't. At Las Vegas (older place than the one in NV) Storrie Lake State Park, but we have used the Walmart there to do a few overnights.
To avoid some of I-10 in Texas, one could use the US 90 Route from Van Horn to San Antonio. Not so raceway speeds on it. I-10 in parts of Texas (West of San Antonio) have a speed limit of 80 mph. It can seem like a raceway.
El Paso, TX RV Parks
Not sure if you would need to use I-10 or not....sent stuff just in case.
:C Not a Snowbird, but originally from South Texas (RGV/Harlingen). If wanting to send time down there, I believe, I would pick the San Antonio Area & the Texas Hill Country as well to do so. Good luck in your Quest. Should have a lot of things to go see & enjoy during a stay in the area as well. Should not be as humid as the Valley, not as crowded, more varied landscapes & nearby large cities with activities. Still have a tough of winter, too.
As far as I know (not saying much), there will not be as many Snowbird RV parks up there. Not like RGV. Lot of other places however. Such as State Parks & COE Campgrounds.
RV Parks Reviews:: San Antonio ::::: New Braunfels :::::: Kerrville ::::::::: Junction :::::: Fredericksburg :::::: Pleasanton ,
Castroville :::::::: Hondo ::::::::: Uvalde :::::: George West ::::::: Seguin :::::::: Goliad/Victoria & Rockport/Corpus Area.
I added the Goliad/Victoria & Rockport & Corpus Area, not Hill Country, but the Coastal Bend area would make a nice place to checkout if needing something else to see & do.
Coastal Bend -------- Ditto --------- RV Park Reviews Matagorda
PS: In Texas, the term 'Snowbird' is not used as often. Instead, 'Winter Texan' is used.
