I just spent the winter in the Hill Country (N of San Antonio, west of Austin). It was only my second winter snowbirding, the first being in Florida. As one who prefers state parks I can say that I thoroughly enjoyed Texas, despite some occasional cold weather. I never made reservations and, with the exception of some weekends, never had trouble getting a site. So much less crowded than Florida. Hope this helps.
