Worth stopping in Yellowstone Park at end of October?

Can anyone tell me if there is any point in stopping at Yellowstone during the last week of October, first week of November on our way down to Arizona? Or is it too late in the year to see anything.

  • We're hoping to stay outside the park from the 8th through the 15th of October. We spoke to several local sources and we we're warned that most everyone shuts down around the 15th (or earlier if the weather deteriorates.)

We've booked a site anyway (Dubois) and are keeping our fingers crossed!

Most long term weather prognosticators are talking a prolonged fall so maybe we'll luck out!
  • Check the park website (nps.gov/yell) for information about which lodgings/restaurants will be open inside the park. Probably not much - by November, when the snow usually starts falling in earnest, they will stop keeping the roads clear and letting the snow build up in preparation for the winter season.

Grizzly RV's closing date this fall is October 15th, by the way. Other CGs will have already closed, but there may be some open.

That said, you're more likely to be able to access the park in late October than you would be in April, since roads are not likely to be snow-packed yet.
  • The shops/some lodges might be closed, but the park itself and all attractions are open. Great time of year to go as the crowds are small. No doubt in my mind, I would absolutely stop if I was remotely in the area.
  • Not sure what is open when you want to be there. We were in West Yellowstone in late Sept and all the shops were closing for the winter. As I recall, the city waterlines were freezing overnight. We stayed at Grizzly RV Park.

  • Unless it starts a hard snow or blizzard, Yellowstone is beautiful year round. In cold weather, the hot thermal features are even better! Wildlife is on the move, and you can do a lot more outside without getting overheated. Might need to wrap up a bit.
  • I have only been there in the summer so not sure about the weather in October but if there is not a ton a snow and you have never been there I would say its worth it just to see all the thermal features and probably small crowds.
