Year Round Campgrounds

We don't travel to far each day, so our first two nights we are still in freezing night time weather. We find it so much better to Motel it rather than trying to warm up a solid frozen RV.

The comfort and ease of a warm room to relax in makes the next days drive more enjoyable, even if cold or bad weather on the road presents itself.

I carry a five gal jug of water in the back seat of the truck. Just pour some in the toilet. If it freezes in the black tank it will thaw out when you get to a warmer place, no problem. Same with the sink. Add a little RV antifreeze to fill the trap in the morning and hit the road. Usually after a couple days you'll find a full hookup spot that's open. If not wait another day or so. Never had a problem.

We got sick of paying full price for campgrounds with limited facilities so after several years we found a hotel with an indoor pool in Fredericksburg VA and close to several restaurants. We don't have to unhook/hookup (they have RV parking); deal with rain, sleet, ice when setting up or leaving (we leave in Jan); or wait for 20 minutes for the RV to warm up; and those conveniences cost us about double what the campgrounds charged us. Are you looking specifically for campgrounds or a quick overnight?

You can do quick overnights in some rest areas, welcome centers, or walmarts. This is what we do from NY...never a campground. Oh wait, not true. We stop in Santee State Park in SC to summarize/unwinterize and get a walk in site. We have never had a problem finding a spot there although there are a few more campers on weekends. I think it is $19 during week and $21 (or close) on weekend. About 3 miles from route 95.

Our first choice is welcome centers because the parking lots are usually bigger. We take our knocks with truck noises.

When we head to FL in Nov we're on the road for 2 nights, both spent at WalMart lots. They're well lit, have security cameras and one in McDonahue GA is patrolled. We save about $60 in CG fees better spent on gas.

Also Crackle Barrel restaurants. They are everywhere.

I don't expect freezing issues, but I didn't expect 100 inches of snow on Cape Cod either. We were pretty much resigned to Walmart or Cabelas for the first night. I was curious to see if anyone had a secret place.

Dutch - thnx for the Millersville KOA suggestion. We've stayed there and it was a reasonable place. Certainly doable for the second night.
