Yellowstone in late July with no reservation--Am I crazy?

Reserve in Madison. My opinion is it is in the park so that eliminates driving into the park from Grand Teton or West Yellowstone. Last time we were there over July 4th. We stayed in West Yellowstone and the drive each day was not bad except for the weekend there were long lines getting into the park. Once we got to the loop traffic thinned out considerably. We also stayed away from the Old Faithful area. Next time we go I plan to stay at Madison if I can.
