Coming in from the North entrance, I would stay at the Mammoth campground or in Gardiner for Mammoth Hot Springs, Tower Falls and the Lamar Valley, all in the northern section of the Park. Madison is good for the Old Faithful area as well as the action up as far as Norris. Canyon is good for the canyon and Hayden Valley and isn't far from Norris either. We have never stayed at Grant as it always seemed too far from the action. Plan to spend an entire day for the boardwalks in the Old Faithful area and don't miss the nearby Black Sand and Biscuit Basins.
IMO West Thumb is boring after experiencing the area around Old Faithful.
