If you go to Upper Pines mid-week in winter with a smallish rig and get there early in the day, there are first-come, first-served unreserved sites available. We have done that several times. Otherwise, it is too crowded.
Another idea -- stay in Lone Pine at Mono Vista and take your toad up 120 to the high country of Tuolumne Meadows (after they open the highway). Much more spectacular (and cooler and less crowded) than Yosemite Valley. We do this pretty often.
