- bradnailerExplorerWe spend a week in the spring and a week in the fall at Lady Bird Johnson Municipal Park just outside of Fredericksburg. Fredericksburg is a fun little town to knock around in but mostly, we go to camp and relax.
The park offers full hook ups for $175 a week. It is off the highway a good ways so there is no highway noise. It's adjacent the airport so there is some plane activity but we enjoy watching them. There is little traffic so we enjoy being able to walk and jog and walk our dogs within the park. The campground was built in an old pecan orchard so most of the sites offer a good amount of shade.
There are a lot of events that take place in Fredericksburg. In October there's a mesquite furniture show downtown. Last time we were there, in April there was a hot rod show going on at the park. Pretty fun seeing a couple of hundred old cars.
There are a lot of Winter Texans who call this place home. - dryflyExplorerIn winter months: Brazos Bend SP, Goose Island SP, Choke Canyon SP.
Rest of year: Garner SP, Davis Mountain SP, Tyler SP, Inks lake SP, Mineral Wells SP.
Why: just fun parks, most have well maintained sites, things to do i.e. hiking and bicycle riding, birding, fishing.
Some of the Texas state parks are great but are really aging and in need of repair. Seems we used to be a model for the system but now parks in Ark and MO seem much nicer. Lots of budget cuts coupled with employees that don't want to work, and just ride around in the truck all day.
