Yuk to some of the popular destinations

Excellent point Jayco-noslide - when our grandkids and family come with us, all activity is outside even though we have a TV. Our aim is to enjoy the outdoors, ride bikes, hike, and swim, and we do it all. The kids always have a great time too.

I know kids usually want constant activity, pools, water slides, and other amusements but parents should resist always going to those places. Will almost guarantee kids will like hiking and being able to run around in forest in shallow streams, etc. especially if they meet some other kids. Lots of campgrounds near a stream where kids can wade for hours; free. We need to wean them away from fast pace artificial entertainment at least part of the time .

I have never cared for the popular tourist destinations, overrun with screaming kids, angry parents, etc. Give me a forest campground any day.

OK, I am generally not cranky but I am an old guy! Note I said generally!

We love to travel with the 5er and have been rv'ing part time for 21 years. We seek out Nature and low key rv parks - don't like cities or crowds.

When I retired (age 55) we built a beautiful home in Estes Park, CO because we loved Rocky Mtn Nat Park. But after 8 years we had to get out of the massive crowd mess. So we moved down here south of Tucson 15 years ago.

When asked by the then new Publisher of the area newspaper to describe myself I thought a minute and came up with "outgoing introvert". I am outgoing and spent my career in engineering sales. But more and more I (we) love solitude and God's beauty. Hence, that is what we seek out in our travels.

To each their own to be sure. Our travels have been the 11 western states and 2 western provinces - have stayed at 192 different RV parks and some many times.

Enjoy this lifestyle and new place, see things, enjoy your quiet time in Nature. You can sit around a bar or restaurant at home.

We leave in 5 days for a return to CO once again - but we go to the southwestern part and will be there two months.

Sorry I rambled - the "outgoing" in me came out! :-)

Coming from southern New England where everything is metro, finding a remote spot with only nature around usually means driving hundreds of miles. Even the state parks and few COE's in our area require 6+ mounths advance reservations if you want any hope of getting a W/E site... slim pickens

We always traveled secondary roads with our 40' motorhome. Our first choices were always national or state parks, national forest campgrounds, Corp of Engineers, county and city parks. We also did a lot of boondocking on public lands traveling gravel roads. We didn't need pavement to stay in gorgeous places.

We also like to travel US and state highways, like the small towns and the small campgrounds. Out in the country would be our choice. We do like hookups rather than boondocking - just easier to find with a big rig. Love COE parks and forestry parks too. We stay away from big cities and the crowded touristy locations.

I'm another old guy (maybe not cranky) that prefers state & national parks, Forest Service & BLM camping. I do enjoy short visits to a few of the "attractions", but have skipped most of them. I've visited Key West, P Town on Cape Cod, and enjoyed walking around and seeing the sights & people, but I wouldn't want to stay. I drove through Pigeon Forge on the way to Smoky Mountain National Park & the Cade Cove Campground, and I don't care what the attractions were, I wouldn't stop (other than waiting in stopped traffic).

I also prefer the "red roads" to the interstates. While slower, far more interesting.

When we were young we started with pop up tent trailers. These could easily travel down the back country dirt logging roads. Good times dry camping along a mountain stream all to ourselves with few others around.

As we got older it became difficult to setup, unpack, tear down etc. We wanted more room and ease. We then went with a hybrid TT. We could still go to some of the back country locations but TT was too big for many.

Got older and even the hybrid got to be a bit of work. Kids got older so we no longer needed the extra beds the pop up or hybrid had. We went to a 5th wheel. It wouldn't last long traveling down the old logging roads so we stick to paved. That limits us more to larger RV campgrounds and resorts.

We aren't alone!!

We often travel to someplace to see something, but we do our best to not go to any kind of campground. (Unless I can't locate a better place to dump and pick potable.) We are going to be going roughly Detroit to Albany. We are planning to take three days along Rt-20. If I can't do better, we will ONP at casinos and Camp Wally.
