We also favor state and federal campgrounds, the more rural the better. We did stop near Branson a few years ago to visit with friends at the Escapees Turkey Creek park across the river in Hollister. About the only "touristy" thing we did while there was a tour of the Shepard of the Hills Fish Hatchery run by the MO DEC.
We're currently boondocking on a timber company's 26,000 acre tree farm in the Adirondacks that's only open for camping to the three remaining lifetime permit holders. We're only about a hundred feet from a nice creek fed pond that's great for bathing.
