We stayed at Virgin River RV Resort last year--really nice park--I highly recommend! It's very close to Zion Natl Park. We actually took a day trip from there to Bryce. In nearby Kanab is the Best Friends Animal Sanctuary--worth a trip if you love animals and have time.
We also went to Monument Valley, but were coming from the east, so I am not sure about the highway.
October should be a great time to visit!
