Having to hold down Shift to drop down one line is dumb

I'm curious what you're doing that requires you to hold shift to drop down a line as I haven't yet experienced that. Is this holding shift necessary when you're reading posts or is it when creating a new post? Just trying to educate myself for possible fixes if I run into things like this.
