There is more involved than the ampacity of the wire. There is a voltage drop that increases with the length of the cable and the current drawn. If the drop is too high the motor can't run at full speed and will draw too much current. That will increase the voltage drop and increase the current draw and so on and so on. Sort of a death spiral.
