Nice work! If it were me, I would use drawer latches/pulls like this. You push them in to lock the drawer, and then you don't catch things (ankles) on them because they are flush to the drawer. Push again and they pop out and are used as pulls. I did my door to my solar equipment that way since it is in the entryway next to the steps - didn't want things catching and liked the locking functionality.
