Added a time delay relay to our AC Compressor

I installed a time delay relay in our HVAC thermostat that starts the ac fan and then about 10 seconds later the compressor. This spreads the total startup load out over a longer time and makes it much easier for an inverter generator to kick over an AC unit.

  • Original poster of this thread changed his mind and starting in post#13 moved it to 12v side of thermostat even though it says 18v to work.
    clicky

    Thanks for the link Diesel_Camper
  • Our air conditioner has it already installed, fan runs for a while before compressor cuts in. Always run it on high fan.

I agree SoundGuy. I have seen it done with one of these added inline before the thermostat on the fan wire. I was just curious if I could use the one in this thread on the fan wire?

I know on our rig all the HVAC wires are 12v DC so that time delay you show wouldn't work. I do have one of those used in a different application though!

This is the timer I used:

  • Interesting! I'll have to mess around with changing it to start compressor 1st. Thanks.

No doubt this helps but since the most significant load by far is caused by the compressor you'd achieve better results by starting the compressor first, then the fan second. I did exactly this by adding a SPDT switch with a centre off position to the thermostat, which also allowed me to select either LO or HI fan speed.

  • Link for timer? Better picture of red (green) wire jumper. Looks like a good way to go. Thanks!
