GordonThree: Even if you are concerned about flimsy walls, you could still do similar. Put a bead of Liquid Nails on those support boards and then screw into the wall. It will never come off, even on thin paneling.
If the cabinet is lined with wall paper, score the wall paper right where those boards will attach. Then peal the wall paper off before using the Liquid Nails so it's gluing the wood to the panel, and not to the wall paper. This will make the shelf much stronger too.
