I have an RVS - 83112 wireless camera that runs on a 9V battery. I put it on my bumper and use it to see my hitch for hooking up. I want to make a connector to connect the camera to my truck.So no more batteries. The camera works on 8V - 12V.Was hoping to use the 4 pin connector but that does not supply 12V power, correct?So then I need to use a 6 pin connector. Question on this setup is do I connect the RED from the camera to the 12V pin and the BLACK to the ground pin? TIA!!

Do you want the camera to be powered all the time, or just when the backup lights are on? Does your 6-pin connector have a backup light circuit? You may have to convert to a 7-pin connector.When I do a project like this, I like to have the wiring diagram for my particular connector in front of me, right next to my voltmeter. Before twisting any wires together I use my voltmeter to check out my plan. Sometimes colors aren't used the way you would think, especially if some of it is made across the pond. The voltmeter is the final verification of what you have. But yes, red is usually the positive lead and black might be the ground on the camera. Again, trace it with your voltmeter or check the markings on the 9 volt battery.

Use the 4 pin, no problem.Power the camera from the white (ground) and brown (marker lights) leads. All you have to do is put on your marker lights while you hitch up.Easy peasy lemon squeezie.

You should know that your electrical system can get up near 15V when the engine is running. Don't know the actual limits on the camera, but the voltage going to it will always be more than 12V.

Like you were told above, your vehicle may produce up to 15 volts. The camera could fry. I'd use something like this to limit the voltage: Buck convertor but it's getting a little complcated. Your 9 volt battery may do the job and last for years if you only use it for hitching up. "K.I.S.S" seems to maybe apply (Keep it simple stupid)

If current draw is constant, you could use a resistor to drop the voltage. Not ideal, but simple. You'd need to know how much current the camera draws.

So should I add a fuse inline or a resistor or something? Camera is rated for 8V - 12V.
