"backup" light

I didn't want to drill into the bumper on mine so I used Industrial Strength Velcro strips. Those backup lights held on for four years without ever coming off. The best part of using the industrial Velcro was that I could reposition them whenever I wanted. I just wish I had taken a picture of it.

I then ran the supply wire to a blue LED rocker switch just inside the door and tied it to the trailer's battery instead of relying on the TV. I did use them a time or two when not hitched up to the TV so it was a useful way to do it.

What about dryer vent screw clamps through the bracket and around the bumper?

Both my RVs/TTs (previous and current) have extra rear lights. They are simple 12V utility lights mounted on rear bumper (facing backwards on a 45 degree angle), connected to onboard 12V battery via inline fuse and manual off/on switch. Very simple, very easy to use and low cost. And best of all, its on a manual switch - which allows me to use when I want to. When used wisely, I never had problems or complaints from others or from CG authorities. We'll worth it….

Cut the bracket off and make a custom enclosure for it. Any auto parts house should have 3M tape used for mounting moldings and such that will hold. Think about mounting the light high but lower than the clearance lights. I like having it switched separately, being LED's you have a energy efficient night or working light out back also.

If it's the round light with 9 LED's like I'm thinking it is, it should be pretty lightweight.

If you have any kind of storage door (with screws in the frame) or a window with screws in the frame, drill some small holes in the bracket and use an existing screw(s) to mount the light. LED's use minimal current, just wire it into the backup lights.

At any rate, I'd avoid the glue thing. It'll weather and fail sooner or later.

You might be able to make a wrap-bracket with thin aluminum to go around the rear bumper. I'd think mounting the light higher up would work better though.

I went a little extreme in the back of the coach, I used a set of HID's with a Euro beam pattern. They create daylight for 500 feet behind the rig for the backup camera. Legal? Doubt it. :B

Put in on the rear bumper or look under the rear for a mount. If you have a window you could suction cup it inside or somehow mount inside. Run the wire to trailer battery with an on off switch. Chances are you will walk the area your backing into or whatever so you can turn it on and off.

Were you looking for a more or less permanent mounting or just something you could attach when you were caught out after dark?

If the later maybe a long line to run from the truck to the rear of the trailer?
Or is it self contained and battery operated?

I'm not concerned about "the man" ... Michigan's rule: as long as your cash is green, your car gets a license tag, doesn't matter if it burns more oil than gasoline or the door panels are rusted clear through. License tags for trailers are even cooler, you pay once and your tag lasts as long as it lasts, no renewal needed until it rusts away.

I'm sure there's plenty of laws on the books, boiler plate copied from US-DOT, but I'm looking more for mechanical advice rather than legal :)

Not sure how your state inspection works for RV trailers but you may run into a problem where the light mounted on the back of the trailer may have to meet DOD requirements...

I had some mounted just under the rear bumper and they had to be DOT approved lenses and also only come on when the truck was in reverse etc... I did not ask if I could keep them covered and only use at the camp grounds when backing... I just quickly removed them and finished my trailer safety inspection...

Just something to check into before you get too far along...
