Balsam Wood

Across the shelves in our medicine cabinets and pantry cabinets: We used a strip of 2" balsam wood (which is very light) across the inside front of the cabinets to create a lip so that when we open the cabinets small items don't roll or fall out. Just a few drops of wood glue here and there to hold it.

  • thanks for the idea. I have some leftover balsa I bought for another project that I can use. I had thought of using the springloaded curtain rods, but I already have the balsa. Good idea for no cost mod. My favorite type.
  • We added a shelf in our medicine cabinet and in addition to the lip on the shelf, we added a matching slat to hold in the tall items.

Balsam is a type of FIR tree (genus ABIES) and is quite dense and heavy!! Balsa, on the other hand is quite light - is that what you used?

Yes, balsa is what I used but every time I typed it auto correct made is balsam so I thought I was mistaken.... Thanks for the clarification.
  • I used a cheap roll of the stuff to put in the bottom of cupboards and nothing has rolled out. I only used it because it was what I had on hand at the time and assumed that I would have to replace it as soon as I could.
    It has worked since 2004.
And I lay anything flat that I can.
I still do not believe that it works.
