fire wood

We usually can always find a local selling wood very close to the campground, if we feel it necessary. We usually by some from the CG and some from the local to balance things.

I will say one thing we started doing our "long trip" is to go hunting for leftover wood every other day or so. People will pull out and sometimes leave any leftover wood sitting there. We started taking a pull behind trailer for our bikes (the ones kids ride in) and haul it back to our site that way. We find that way we usually only have to buy wood once or twice during our entire stay.

I would suggest that the percentage increase in buying firewood locally is worth the price to slow the spread of known tree diseases. It also occured to me that if all had a callous disregard for the regulations, it would lead to a decrease in the supply of wood, therefore, escalating the price.

I get that some people don't have any enjoyment or expectation of sitting around a campfire with friends and family. Not everyone wants to roast a hot dog or burgers or mountain pies. It is not my intention to require you to.

In the same respect, why criticize those of us who do cherish that time and traditions? Camping has been a cherished family activity for so long, I don't think we could even identify all the ways people do it, let alone debate which way is better.

Personally, I think people who outlaw campfires *while camping* are nuts!

I understand some folks don't have the health to immerse themselves in the outdoors and are forced to watch it from inside. But why anyone would choose that...?

Now when we use a camper instead of a tent, we don't want to *rely* on a fire for food, but we like that option ;)

You and RVpark? Don't worry, the forum isn't a team sport. It's inevitable your opinion will match another's at some point ;)

In reality, it was only he who said anything disparaging about himself (though some of the practices he shares with a few over firewood were challenged). I think that is why some feel he is a bit bitter.

But that is his personal decision, the rest of us are discussing the topic of campers being gouged for firewood and discussing some of the reasons and options- and expressing our dissatisfaction ;) CG owners don't have to listen or respect those opinions, but it may affect the choices of their potential customers.

Anyone know of a "local" with a good deal on firewood in the Black Moshannon SP area? (Northwestern PA) We're going there for a week with family and would really like to buy a week's worth of firewood, rather than transport it!

The last site I bought wood from was imported to south Texas from Oklahoma. I bring my own from my yard that I cut and aged with no bugs or mold. Also we usually camp within 150 miles of home so most likely our area is already covered.

Like it or not, these forums have evolved (or devolved, depending upon your position) to the point where many people just start posting trying to justify why they shouldn't follow a law or obey a rule. Instead of the lame argument that I won't reveal the locations of my parks and that somehow makes my points irrelevant maybe you should defend the position you appear to take that it is OK to ignore rules and laws you don't personally like. But I know why you don't, to make those kinds of arguments you need to be brighter than a 5 watt bulb.

Thanks for the clarification. And you are right, I am burned out on those type of people. Actually I was burned out on those kind of people the first time I ever met one. Thankfully as the owner I can take whatever action I want and answer only to my conscience. I really pity the people who have to juggle the line between being a good employee and dealing with those kind of people. May the force be with you.

May as well reduce electric service to 15 amps only, eliminate that pesky water hookup and tell visitors to mow their own grass. That would be really convenient for the CG owner, which is apparently the most important thing? :R

Okay, I am being a bit sarcastic to make my point. If campers aren't allowed to have campfires or are being forced to pay gouging prices for something as basic as a campfire, why bother? It certainly isn't a camper-friendly scenario :(

Running a CG (state park or any other, not any one in particular) is more than amenities, it's the experience for visitors. More inviting and pleasant amenities attract visitors and result in good reviews and recommendations.

Personally, when we camp, we are there to enjoy OUR FAMILY time. Although we are courteous and respectful of CG owners, I couldn't care less about any whining and excuses WHY we can't have a campfire, just that we won't be back and we'll certainly warn others.

Vote with your dollar and patronage. Sometimes polite discussion on a forum isn't enough, some folks need to be compelled to consider campers' convenience by translating it into (their) dollars.

It'll work itself out. The smart owners will thrive, the others may not survive. Those who don't heed the customers' concerns and warnings will have to learn the hard way ;)

Back OT...we look for locals who sell firewood at reasonable prices and ALWAYS respect the honor system.

Of course I hide the fact we don't allow campfires, I am nothing if not unscrupulous and greedy. Funny thing is, we have had many, many of returning customers and new customers as well thank us for doing away with the smoky, smelly fire pits. Way more than we have had people grouse about not having them. We may not get your business, but our experience is there are more people either opposed or ambivalent to campfires than make it a requirement. To you a campfire may be more important than quality utility connections, sparkling clean restrooms and well maintained facilities but we are more than able to find plenty of people to fill the parks without campfires and we put the time and energy those campfires used to take and put it towards those other attributes I mentioned.
