Bathroom wall

I am wanting to add one of these on the bathroom wall for hanging towels. But, I don't know a thing about RV construction and if I can do this.

There are no studs on the wall that the sink and mirror is on, so I can't install it there. The back wall behind the toilet is an exterior wall, so it feels completely solid ... and I should ? be able to mount it there.

Can I add this? If so, is there a rule on how long the screws can be? I just would not want the screws to come through the outside of the RV. :R

Thanks! Jules

Let me answer your question directly - NO.

I have one of these and can tell that it will put a significant prying load on the walls of your trailer that can only be resisted by lag bolts through the walls with backing plates. Sure you don't want to do that. I mount mine on the ladder at the back of the trailer as it was intended for. Trailer walls are not strong enough for anything other than light loads. Add to that the fact that this is not a static structure - it moves and bounces down the road, and puts dynamic loads on the attachment locations. I am sure you can see where I am going with this.

All of your interior walls are probably made of 1/4 inch thick luan plywood covered with a decorative paper. Mount anything you want using appropriate mounting materials.

Donn, I'm not a construction expert ... But can you hang things using screws and those metal splitter things that open behind the wall ... and hang anything with any weight on 1/4 inch plywood? I don't know that I trust doing that with such thin plywood.

I'd suggest to look into the Command line of hanging hardware. You probably have aluminum studs and the surface mounted Command hangers don't need holes drilled into wood and metal. If you anticipate a lot of weight, get the Heavy Duty Command hangers.

I use a ton of the Command hooks, etc. in the house, but I wasn't sure they would work in the RV. The walls are textured (wallpaper?)

  • don't know about the details but I would mount that device onto a larger board that you can stain/paint to go with the current wall, then fasten that board to some studs, etc.
