Yes, you can use the 8d battery but you're going to pay a cost penalty and have the weight to deal with. All of that for not much improvement in capacity.

I have 2 X Sam's Club 6V's in one bank, separated from the 12V distribution panel by 6'. I also have 235W of solar and run a small residential fridge. I haven't used a generator in years.

I think some of the OP's problems relate to not establishing a baseline "full charge" measurement, not knowing the total draw of his 12V items, and parking in the shade. No solar system can overcome lack of light on the panels. The fridge should be monitored to see if a defrost accessory is being powered. Eliminating that heating strip can add considerable reserve to the batteries.

With an SG of .1250 at full charge, some cells of those batteries have already suffered sulfation. When new, my 6V's had a baseline full charge SG of .130.
