The best fabric is the Sunbrella without the second layer. Avoid black, red, brown as these will fade the fastest. Go with yellow, blue, or green as they reflect more UV and will last 3x as long. Sunbrella comes in two widths so get the wider fabric so you will have fewer seams.
Ready made awnings will cost at least twice as much and are not going to last as long as there is little in the way of reinforcing of stress points.
