Both Charge Controller and Converter Charging Batteries?

Since installing my solar panels (4x100W Renogy w/40amp MPPT controller) I've turned off the converter by throwing the breaker so the only thing charging the 4x6v batteries (225AH each)is the charge controller. Because the MPPT charges at 4 different rates depending on state of charge I felt it was best to disconnect the converter.

Do I HAVE to disconnect the convertor? Is it ok to leave both charging but not most efficient?

    Hi,

My solar system plays well with the converter, and alternator, but not so well with the Magnum Inverter charger. The way to find out is to try it.

Have you researched, are there any networked charge controllers that will negotiate with a Magnum and charge accordingly?

It seems many higher end controllers offer rs485 ports as does the Magnum. Something must be possible.

    Edit: found this http://static.us-inverters.com/docs/support/

Magnum serial protocol document is there for download.
  • I unplugged my converter after I installed the solar system. I don't see any point in using both.
  • Our WFCO converter drew power from the battery and since it was junk I just removed it. Solar plays nice with TV alternator.
