Butyl tape trick

I was working with sealing some seams after some repair work on my motorhome today, and had to deal with the Butyl tape. I don't think it's any great secret that it's not the cleanest or easiest stuff to work with.

At any rate, I was having trouble with the goop sticking to the backing of the next coil on the roll rather than coming up with its backing. After a bit of annoyance, I came up with the solution of rotating the backing around a turn and using the tape upside-down off the roll, as it were, unwinding it with the goop on the outside of the roll rather than the backing paper. It worked out much better that way. Once done, it's just a matter of wrapping some of the spent backing paper around the roll before storing it.

Maybe this is common knowledge for people who regularly use the tape, or maybe I had a slightly defective roll making it stick when it oughtn't; I don't know. But if you find yourself in a similar situation, I think it's a trick worth remembering.
  • what are you guys using it for? Could you use it over seams instead of caulk or no?

It's mainly used underneath things that need to be sealed--outside window flanges, J-channel extrusions on the seams, things like that. It wouldn't work very well as a caulk as it stays comparatively runny and sticky, particularly in warm weather.
