Do some pictures so we can see what your are working with. Like I said, I just used the existing TV base for ours, and the screen width fit inside the opening just right. Like you mentioned, it was not high enough, so I did put a piece of 4x6 under the base just for height. At the top of the opening, I had a piece of dark smoke plexiglass left over from a sun visor, so I cut that to fit above the tv in the old opening. Looks great! And, if yours is in a cabinet, there is a lot of good storage space for wiring and junk behind.
