The iPhone uses a USB connector which is rated for a max 2.0 amp at 5volts, only an iPad requires the 2.0 amp most other adapters supply .75-1.1 amps again at 5 volts, voltage dropped inside the 12 volt to usb adapter. So you could easily pickup power from a nearby light and feed to a 12 volt receptacle.
