Dash Radio

Well, my dash radio crapped out. We are relatively sure it is the dash mounted switch. How the heck do we change THAT? Looks like the whole dash must come out.

We are also interested in changing the radio itself anyway, and replacing it with a newer dash radio. Is it straightforward like changing a car dash radio?

Oh...we have a 2000 Monaco Diplomat. Any help or advice would be great!

  • I'll be keen to hear what you decide to install. I find the new Sony that I got is much too complicated to operate while driving... way too many tiny function buttons, and you need to put your finger into a pencil sharpener before using them. I really want something with on/off, volume, a few presets, and manual tuning. Guess I'm talking about a 1960's radio, huh?
  • Thanks everyone. Keep it coming. On the road now, but have 2 weeks in the same place. It's to be my priority this week.
  • Kenwood head units are among the best units out there (dollar for dollar, not for audiophiles). Their mid-upper ones have the USB jack either on the front end or as a wire/jack for the glove box. Here is ours in a water-resistant housing.

  • Before you upgrade, you might want to see how yours is wired for 12VDC. Mine, along with several others is only powered from the chasis (no switch to draw from the house batteries). Might want to re-wire or get a charger before you drain your chasis batteries beyond the point of being able to bring them back (they are often not deep cycle but high amp starting types). IF you are on the road a lot, pulling from the alternator, go for it.

X2 on the USB, it's almost a must in this day and age as it give you a lot more options. You can get modern, up-to-date dash models for a 100-150 bucks that have modern stabilization so your CDs won't skip. Of course you can spend much more and get DVD, etc. The sky's the limit. But a good basic stereo is not terribly expensive. If you've got a DIN type radio, which I have a hunch you do, they come straight out through the front with a little release too. Go to any Best Buy, etc, like suggested above and they can advise and quickly determine how it comes out. Of course any good car audio shop is a good option too.

I don't know for sure, but most of these radios will slide right out if you use some sort of "release" tool.
I'd take it to a place like BEST BUY, and see what they would charge to replace it. Often, they will have a special, where the installation is FREE, if you buy a radio in a certain price range.....well worth the money...no matter how handy you think you may be!:B

Plus the upgrade would probably change you from cassettes to CDs:B

    LOL..Cassettes.

It actually DOES have a CD player, but it skips like hell. Plus, I want a more modern one with a MP3 plug so I can play my music from time to time.

    Thanks!!
