Get your self some of this type of upholstery thread. I wouldn't use a welt like the video shows, that is just adding another complexity into the project. If you use a heavy upholstery material, you won't need any welts.
I bought the material for my cushions at the same upholstery supplier. They had a few bolts of material on clearance, it was around $5/yd.
