The early versions of the 47RE had too small of a thrust bearing and they would eat themselves up. Manual trans and you are good to go.
Google 7.3 exhaust brake. The 7.3 has a valve on the back of the turbo that can be turned into an exhaust brake on the cheap. With a few wiring mods, the converter can be locked up at the same time the valve is activated. All for less than $40! Make sure your third brake light works.
