DIY RV Kayak Rack plans

I have designed, built and tested for two years, a two position kayak rack that can carry two 10' kayaks upright attached to rear 2" hitch. I have made several improvements in that period and believe it is an alternative to the expensive options currently on the market.

The DIY plans also allow a standard 2" receiver bicycle rack to be used. The rack will require welding, either by yourself or a shop.

What do RVer's think?

If it has to be welded, it is not really a DIY project.

Following this logic, needlepoint/crossstitch/sewing isn't DIY because I lack the skillset and tools to do it.
  • I realize that this DIY RV kayak rack would only appeal to a subset of DIYers, because of the welding required. That is why the plans would be illustrated in a step by step format, to enable that individual to complete the rack. Some of the assembly is in fact bolted together, to allow for more compact storage, when not in use. Thanks for the input.

    Two points.

The first is that in this day and age any time you provide somebody instructions beyond "turn left at Maple St. and go three blocks down" you create the possibility that somebody will screw up and some lawyer will look for a reason to make YOU liable.

Secondly, it's a good idea, but try to refine it to the point it can be bolted together. It would also take out the chances of a rookie welding it poorly and it falling apart going down the road. I'd think a pair of kayaks coming loose at 65 mph would be, well .......... Exciting.

Or already have a DIY friend who helped us build one. I know as a DIYer I feel much better helping than charging.

You might try to sell them on EBAY..
