We changed our queen (crawl over the other person) bed in our 5er to 2 twins. They're 30" wide....we, adults, sleep just fine and have plenty of room left over. Your 13 yr old niece should be able to sleep in a 26" space. I think squeezing around the hallway for the sake of a bigger bed would be a no-no in my household.
