Like others said, the lead acid batteries do require ventilation. As noted, you can use a sealed box with a tube running outside. This is the method used on cars that have the battery inside the passenger compartment, and the battery itself has a vent nipple on it that you connect o a hose running outside the car. This is how it is on my wife's Chevy Traverse; the battery is under the middle seat, inside the car. The group of battery it uses has the little vent nipple on it and all you do is push the vent hose on when swapping the battery. Similar concept applies to your application.
