I don't know if I would be too concerned with heat as batteries have been in boxes like myredracer posted for years. But as far as venting you are concerned about heat which behaves like hydrogen gas in that both are lighter than air. You could use a sealed box with a tube at the top and just make an equal sized hole opposite the tube in the side near the bottom. This will allow air fresh air to come in from the bottom, flow across the battery, and replace the escaping heat and hydrogen exiting the top of the box. If you really wanted a powered vent you could just add a 120mm computer fan to the hole at the bottom of the box.
Of course making a hole in the side of the box negates the ability of the box to contain spills if the battery case were to rupture for any reason. you could put the whole setup in a larger open plastic pan like maybe one of those plastic concrete mixing pans from Home Depot and such. That would hold your sealed and vented box and still contain any battery leakage.
