I don't recall what resistance I used, as it was several years ago and it is shrink wrapped rather permanently. It was done mainly so The kids could recognize their trailer, and we've done a lot of camping in the late fall when it gets dark early. Never on past bedtime.
Maybe try something with a adjustable dimmer switch instead of a resistor. That way you can very very light output in response to the level of "resistance" do you get from your neighbor
