With the sand issue, you definitely want to avoid cracks and grooves. I would go with a good quality sheet vinyl. Look for a matte finish so any scratches from cats and/or sand will be inconspicuous. No tile, laminate, prefinished hardwood, or vinyl tiles to catch sand.
I recently put Mannington sheet vinyl in my kitchen/dining room at home. I got the "Platinum" quality level, the highest, which is thick, resilient, easy to clean, and pleasant to walk on.
